As it is, it’s only locked to the Optus network – changing to a different MVNO based on Optus does not require unlocking. So, unlocking your modem is really moot – you might want to do it if you want to limp along on EDGE, use it overseas, or make calls on other networks with it. Unfortunately, as many of the Huawei modems are only 900/2100Mhz UMTS mode, they are not suitable for 3G high speed data on the Telstra or “new” Vodafone networks. But if you use DC-Unlocker to unlock, you will have to pay for it! If you’re not sure whether your modem is locked, a quick check using the DC-Unlocker software will tell you. It will work with many of the lower-end older modems. You will need to place another carrier SIM into the SIM tray for it to prompt you for the unlock key. If you have any Huawei modem, you can easily unlock it for use with any carrier by plugging its IMEI into this site and getting an unlock key. Lets take a look at two of them – a Virgin Mobile branded Huawei E153u and a ‘yes’ Optus branded Huawei E160E.
